Gangster Rajat Agarwal alias Karan Masti, wanted by Amritsar police in around a dozen criminal cases including murder and robbery, was found dead in a car in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

Deputy commissioner of police Amrik Singh Pawar said they received information from UP police about the Masti’s dead body.

“We have sent a team to Ghaziabad for confirming the death,” he added.

Amritsar commissioner of police (CP) SS Srivastva also confirmed Masti’s death but didn’t disclose the reason behind his death.

In January this year, Karan had fled from Amritsar court complex while under police custody. He was arrested in October 2017 with illegal weapons.

Karan was among other gangsters, including Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, booked by Amritsar police for the killing of Congress councillor Gurdeep Singh Pehalwan who was shot dead in the Gol Bagh area in June.

Karan’s role in Guru Bazaar heist was also being probed by Amritsar police. Some unidentified men had looted jewellery worth ₹6 crore from a jeweller at gun point in September.

Police had claimed that Karan was caught in the closed circuit television (CCTV) footage of Guru Bazaar heist.

FACEBOOK POST APPREHENDS ENCOUNTER

A Facebook post by a user named ‘Bahman Ambarsaria’ which surfaced on Saturday night apprehended Masti’s encounter. The post read: “It is a bad news that our brothers Rinka and Rajat Malhotra aka Karan Masti have been arrested in a joint operation by Delhi and Punjab police. Police want to do their encounter. It is a request to present the duo in court.” The Facebook user also tagged around 20 friends in the post, including gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria who is in Hoshiarpur jail, requesting to share the message.

Another post surfaced on Sunday which was posted by another user named ‘RIP Sangam Malhotra’. The post read that Karan Masti has died.

SS Srivastva, however, said Masti was not killed in any encounter.

DCP Amrik Singh said their team has reached Ghaziabad which will find the sections under which the UP police had registered the case against Masti.

“The cause of his death has not been confirmed yet,” he added.
