Member of legislative assembly (MLA) and Olympian Pargat Singh on Sunday distributed sports kits worth ₹1 crore to more than 3,500 youths of 61 villages during a function at the local Kukkar Pind of the district.
The function was organised at a sports stadium of the village where the MLA and deputy commissioner Varinder Kumar Sharma, police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar and senior superintendent of police Navjot Singh Mahal handed over the kits to the sportspersons.
The sports kits of different games, including basketball, badminton, football, hockey, volleyball, cricket and others, were given.
The MLA said it was the need of the hour to promote sports among the youth. Sports can help them to excel in their lives and become ambassadors of their village.
He said the state government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that Punjab emerges as a front-runner state in sports.
He thanked chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh and rural development and panchayat minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa for creating an environment conducive for sports.
Surinder Singh, a sportsperson from Hardo Pharala village in Jalandhar, said it was a good move that government was promoting sports in villages.
“Now, government should construct high-tech stadiums in villages so that youths can enroll in sports and stay away from drugs,” he added.
