GURUGRAM: A group of unidentified men allegedly ransacked an apartment in Block C of Suncity Township in Sector 54, on Saturday, and fled with cash, jewellery and other valuables together worth ₹4 lakh, the police said.

Saturday’s theft is one among the 35 thefts that have been reported to the police from blocks C, B and D of the Sector 54 township within this year.

The RWA members alleged that not a single theft has been solved, and they have therefore decided to meet the police commissioner on Tuesday to discuss the area’s security situation.

The apartment belongs to one Sanjay Kumar Roy, 51. The theft took place between 11.45 am and 9.30 pm, when the couple was away at work.

The thieves entered the apartment from the kitchen after removing the window grille and took ₹50,000 cash, watches and jewellery worth ₹3.5 lakh, the police said.

Roy said his wife and him do not have fixed work timings. “We leave home as our work demands. The thieves must have kept a close watch on our movements before entering the apartment,” he said.

“The money was kept at different places in different rooms. The thieves ransacked all almirahs, bed boxes, trucks and drawers. They even collected the coins that lay scattered. We usually don’t keep cash and jewellery at home except the amount needed on a routine basis,” Roy said.

Meanwhile, RWA members said the theft at the Roys is not the first theft in the area and alleged that CCTV cameras installed in the privately maintained township are defunct . Further, there is no patrolling at night.RWA general secretary VMK Singh said there is no security check at the entrance, and inadequate number of guards is also among the reasons for rampant thefts.

“Not even a single theft case has been solved in last three years. People do not feel safe and most of them have stopped stepping out even during the day,” Singh said.

ACP (crime) Shamsher Singh said they have arrested 21 people involved in theft cases in last three months, but “none of them were involved in the Suncity cases”.
