: Public works department (PWD) minister Vijay Inder Singla and former Congress MLA Surinder Pal Singh Sibia were convicted of stalling rail traffic by the court of chief judicial magistrate here on Wednesday.

A case was registered against the two by Railway Protection Force under Section 174 of The Railways Act-1989 (obstructing running of train) on May 5, 2015.

They were released on probation for six months on furnishing a personal bond of ₹35,000 each, with the condition that they will not indulge in any act of similar nature during this period.

Singla said he will challenge the order in the higher court.

“The convicts had pleaded that they are social workers. No other case has ever been registered against them. They are ordered to be released on probation for six months on furnishing personal bond in the sum of ₹35,000 ,” says the order.

Singla and Sibia appeared before the court with their counsels. Sibia, a one-time Congress MLA from Sangrur, had joined Shiromani Akali Dal before the state assembly elections in 2017. He had unsuccessfully contested from Barnala segment on a SADBJP ticket. “The railways had
