With this, police claimed to have solved the 2008 triple murder during a robbery at a gas agency at Cheema town of Sunam.

On their input, police arrested three of their accomplices, Gurmail Singh (43) of Raseen village in Ludhiana district, Major Singh (43) and Gurmail Singh alias Gela (55) of Kanjhla and Ghanauri Kalan villages in Sangrur district and recovered a cache of firearms they allegedly snatched in the past.

Patiala senior superintendent of police (SSP) Mandeep Singh Sidhu said Amanjit, son of a former Punjab Police sub-inspector (SI), is the kingpin of the gang and planned all the robberies since 2006.

“They kept changing their modus operandi every time they committed robbery. Also, they ensured no evidence was left on the crime spot after committing robberies. Amanjit formed the gang and used his father’s service revolver to commit their first robbery of ₹3 lakh at Sangrur’s Kanjhla village. They would carry recce to before looting cash vans in Patiala and Sangrur districts,” Sidhu said.

“Gurmail left the gang after he had an issue with other members over the share of loot after the ₹37 lakh Nabha robbery in 2011. Jagdev joined Amanjit in 2011 and both are active since then,” Shaminder Singh, incharge CIA, who is leading the probe into the case, said.
