Niranjan quizzed over Diljit ‘show’ at daughter’s wedding

MOHALI : Enforcemen­t Directorat­e (ED) deputy director Niranjan Singh was on Tuesday cross-examined in a special Mohali court over the expenditur­e he incurred on his daughter’s wedding in 2016 featuring a performanc­e by Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh. The hearing was in connection with the Bhola drug racket case. Niranjan is being questioned by the defence counsels of the accused, Anoop Singh Kahlon and Manpreet Singh Gill, in the money-laundering case registered in connection with the drug case.

MOHALI: Enforcemen­t Directorat­e (ED) deputy director Niranjan Singh was on Tuesday cross-examined in a special Mohali court over the expenditur­e he incurred on his daughter’s wedding in 2016 featuring a performanc­e by Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh.

The hearing was in connection with the multi-crore Bhola drug racket case. Niranjan is being questioned by the defence counsels of the accused, Anoop Singh Kahlon and Manpreet Singh Gill, in the money-laundering case registered by ED in connection the drug case. Niranjan was investigat­ing officer in the case.

“I had probed complaints against singers Diljit Dosanjh, Miss Pooja, Gippy Grewal and Jazzy B. Diljit was found to have violated the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) and was imposed some penalty. I am the only earning member of my family and in 2018 I was having approximat­ely a monthly income of ₹1.5 lakh,” Niranjan told the defence counsels.

He said Diljit had also attended the wedding of his daughter on November 5, 2016. “He (Diljit) had sung some songs probably on the demand of those present. I do not remember how much I paid him. But I did make him some payment,” he said.

The defence counsels sai Diljit charges ₹40 lakh for a performanc­e. Niranjan was also asked as how many guests attended the wedding, to which he said he did not remember the number. He also rejected the allegation that he met Majithia in a hotel in which a Jalandhar lawyer, who is father of a Congress’ media panelist, was also present.
