SANGRUR MAN GETS LIFE TERM

A session court, on Wednesday, sentenced Gurlal Singh alias Pinka to life imprisonme­nt for murder of a Khokhar Kalan man in 2014, in Sangrur.

The court also convicted state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) farmer leader Maninder Singh, whose gun was used to commit the crime.

He was put on six-month probation under Sections 30/54/59 of the Arms Act. The court has also slapped a fine of ₹2,000 on the BJP leader.

Maninder is the general secretary of BJP’s Kisan Morcha Punjab.

Two other accused — Darbara Singh and Kartar Singh — were acquitted by addition session judge Jaswinder Sheemar.

THE CASE

On June 30, 2014, victim Harnaib Singh was murdered at Khokhar Kalan village near Lehragaga over some land dispute.

On complaint of deceased’s son Baljinder Singh, police had booked three persons — Gurlal Singh, Darbara Singh and Kartar Singh, all of Sanghreri village, — under Sections 302 (murder), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtheranc­e of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under the Arms Act at Chhajli police station.

The complainan­t had said that his father was watering their fields when the accused, who are their relatives came in a car and shot at Harnaib, alleging that he was working on their share of land.

“The court, in its judgment, pronounced life imprisonme­nt to Pinka. Maninder was put on six months probation and has been released with the condition that he will not indulge in any such act during the probation period,” said Narpal Singh Dhaliwal, Baljinder’s counsel.
