JAMMU: A video clip of political science department head of Jammu University, professor Muhammad Tajjudin calling freedom fighter Bhagat Singh a terrorist went viral on social media on Thursday.

A student of the political science department Deepak Gupta recorded the video when the professor was giving a lecture in the class and uploaded it on social media. “He could have given better examples of Afzal Guru, Ajmal Kasab, Hafiz Saeed and other terrorists. However, he chose a freedom fighter ,” Deepak said. “Since the professor enjoys a certain amount of power, no student could muster courage to confront him, but his remarks didn’t go down well with them,” Deepak said. He said a complaint letter was submitted to vice-chancellor Manoj Dhar against the professor.

A University official said the V-C has constituted a six-member panel under dean, academic affairs, professor Keshav Sharma to look into the matter.

Professor Tajjudin said, “I was teaching Lenin , whose brother was killed in a terror act and in that context I mentioned Bhagat Singh. Perhaps, it was not right on my part to say so. I called him a terrorist but those who believed in non-violence, especially Gandhians equated him with terrorism.” He said, “The students could have shared their concern with me rather than making a video. Probably I went wrong and I am really sorry for it”.

The V-C could not be reached for comments on the matter despite repeated attempts.
