: The Panipat city police arrested two persons for allegedly chasing and trying to hit Punjab State Women Commission chairperson Manisha Gulati’s vehicle several times between Sonepat and Panipat in Haryana on Wednesday morning.

Lovepreet and Gurvinder of Sidharth Nagar in Panipat have been booked under Sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 427 (whoever commits mischief and thereby cause loss) and 294 (fraudulent use of false instrument for weighing), 354D (stalking) and 34 (criminal acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

While Gurvinder has completed his Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA), Lovepreet is a second-year student. They were going to Panipat after attending a wedding function in Delhi.

The incident took place at 8am when Gulati was travelling in a Toyota Fortuner being driven by her son from Delhi to Chandigarh. The police escort vehicle was ahead her SUV, she said.

In her complaint to the police, Gulati said a group of persons in a Maruti Swift car tried to overtake her SUV.

“I asked my son to let the car pass. But the occupants of the Swift kept following us between Sonepat and Panipat,” she alleged. They also tried to hit the escort vehicle and the SUV and even hurled abuses at her, she alleged.

“As we were about to reach a toll plaza ahead of Panipat, they took a U-turn and fled after seeing a police vehicle stationed there,” she said.

Terming it to be a case of road rage, Panipat SP Sumit Kumar said the miscreants didn’t attack the Punjab State Women Commission chairperson but chased her vehicle.

“On the basis of the registration number of the car provided by the complainant, we have arrested two persons. The car has also been impounded. Investigations are on,” he said.
