The Himachal Pradesh government has decided to reduce the bond money for MBBS doctors who pursue higher medical courses from ₹10 lakh to ₹5 lakh, chief minister Jai Ram Thakur said Wednesday.

Speaking in the state assembly on the third day of the ongoing budget session, Thakur said the state cabinet decided to reduce bank guarantee by half in its Tuesday meeting.

Chief minister Jai Ram Thakur, while replying to a question raised by Dalhousie legislator Asha Kumar regarding chemotherapy facilities, said the decision in this regard was taken in cabinet meeting held on January 29. He said resident doctors of state medical colleges have been protesting against the bank guarantee policy since long. “The decision will help stop the exodus of doctors to others states and resolve various problems faced by them,” Tha- kur said. He said many doctors opt to serve in other states after completing their post graduation in the state which has led to the shortage of specialists.

Later, interacting with media outside the House, health minister Vipin Singh Parmar said the policy for doctors pursuing higher studies was flawed and was of no help in curbing the exodus. “The doctors pursuing post graduate degrees were not in a position to deposit such huge amount and hence a decision was taken to reduce it,” he said.

Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh is expecting to get a nod soon to construct a cancer tertiary unit here, state health and family welfare minister Vipin Parmar informed the Assembly on Wednesday.

He said the state was awaiting permission from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to construct the building that falls in the core area of the capital. “We are hopeful of getting the permission for construction soon,” Parmar said.
