AMRITSAR: The city police on Wednesday recovered the newborn baby who was abducted from the civil hospital, Amritsar, and arrested a couple for kidnapping the baby on the pretext of getting him enrolled for some government scheme.

The accused have been identified as Gurjeet Singh, son of Narinder Singh and his wife Simran Kaur, residents of village Gurwali of Chatiwind area.

Commissioner of police (CP) Sukhchain Singh Gill said, “On Monday, the newborn baby was abducted from the civil hospital. The accused posing as governmentemployees abducted the baby on the pretext of providing financial help to child’s parents under government scheme.”

Soon after the abduction, a police team, led by additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP- city 3) Harpal Singh, additional commissioner of police (ACP-east) Jaspreet Singh and station house officer of A-Division police station, Neeraj Kumar, launched a manhunt to rescue the child, he said.

He said SHO Neeraj on Wednesday traced the location of the couple and arrested Simran, who holds a degree of masters in economics, and Gurjeet Singh, a gym trainer, and handed over the child to his parents.

“Location of Gurjeet Singh was traced near Shaheeda Sahib Gurdwara here. After Gurjeet was arrested, he informed that the newborn baby is with his wife at their house at Gurwali village . The police then arrested Simran and recovered the child from the village,” said SHO Neeraj.

“It was found out that the couple got married in 2016 and had no child. The woman had suffered several miscarriages. The couple also tried to adopt a child but was denied adoption from authorities, due to which they took the extreme step,” added CP.

A case has been registered against the duo under Sections 363 (kidnapping) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The newborn boy, son of Ranjit Singh and Daljeet Kaur, was abducted by the couple who was present in the hospital during his birth on September 23.

Accused claiming to be government employees took the child and his grandmother to Husainpura Chowk for filling a form to avail government scheme benefits and later deceived the grandmother and disappeared along with the child. The Mahatma practised Ahimsa until his last breath. The world sat up and took notice when he pioneered India’s freedom movement that culminated with the Independence of the country in 1947. As we celebrate his 150th birth anniversary, we should vow to make India a better place to live in.
