9 DROWN DURING IDOL IMMERSION IN DHOLPUR

Nine people drowned during idol immersion in different incidents in Dholpur district on Tuesday.

Police said some people of Bareh Mori village under Diholi police station area in Dholpur district had gone in a tractor trolley to immerse the idol of Goddess Durga in Chambal river after the nine of Navratra festivitie­s.

When one of the devotees, identified as Raju, entered the river, he started drowning. Hearing his cries, five other colleagues of Raju also jumped into the river to rescue him, but all of them drowned, said Suman Kumar, station House officer (SHO), Diholi police station.

After receiving the informatio­n, police teams reached the spot and called the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) for a rescue operation. Later, bodies of Sachin, Binu, Pravesh, Amit were recovered from the river, while a search was on for Raju and Bhola.

Dholpur district collector Rakesh Jayaswal and superinten­dent of police Mridul Kachhawa also reached the spot.

In another incident, which took place in Sempau police station area, an 18-year-old boy drowned in Parvati river when he, along with some others, had gone to immerse an idol of Goddess Durga.

Police said that five youths of Dhanari village had entered the river to immerse the idol when they started drowning. Aman Gaur drowned in the river, but Lovesh Tomar, Narendra Singh, Parmar Singh and Azeem Khan were rescued, the police added.

The victim’s body was handed over to the family after postmortem, the police said.

Two more drowned during idol immersion in Chambal river in Kolari police station and Rajakhera police station areas.
