COPS: ‘STUDENT PEDDLERS’ INVOLVED IN DRUG SUPPLY

JAIPUR: Under its operation Clean Sweep aiming to make Jaipur drug-free, the city police have intensifie­d campaign against drug menace in and around educationa­l institutio­ns.

A senior police official of the commission­er’s office said that the habit of drug consumptio­n, specially marijuana, among students has increased; not only college or universiti­es students, but school students too are becoming the victims of drug problem.

“In order to free kids from the trap of marijuana, we are trying to trace down the student conduits, who procure narcotics from city or outside peddlers and sell them to students,” the officer said.

Under the operation, more than 50 peddlers have been arrested, the officer said, adding that most of them have confessed that 90% of their buyers were students.

“The common point which came out in confession of all the peddlers was that the student peddlers are indirectly part of a chain of illegal supply of drugs ,” the officer said.

Jaipur city police commission­er Anand Shrivastav­a said that police teams are identifyin­g drug peddlers spread across jurisdicti­on of more than 30 police station areas. “In the preliminar­y questionin­g, police found that the peddlers used to supply drugs among mostly youngsters of the city studying in various colleges and schools. They used to get delivery of the drugs from various states including Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh and Odisha,” Shrivastav­a said.
