Lashkar-e-Taiba militant was killed and a Army soldier injured in an encounter between the ultras and the security forces in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Tuesday.

This is the second operation against militants in the Valley in last 24 hours.

The militant is identified as Khalid alias Jibran, they said.

Officials said a joint team of police and Rashtriya Rifles had launched an a cordon-and-search operation in Kulan area in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district late Monday night following inputs about the presence of militants.

During the search, the hiding militants fired upon the security forces, who retaliated, according to an officer.

The Pakistan-based LeT militant was killed during the gunfight and the injured Army soldier was taken to a medical facility for treatment, Ganderbal senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) Khalil Poswal said.

“The searches are underway and arms and ammunition has been recovered from the spot,” the senior superinten­dent of police said.

BANDIPORA GUNFIGHT: SLAIN MILITANT WAS LASHKAR COMMANDER

On Monday, two militants were killed in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district in an overnight encounter with the security forces.

Police said the slain militants were affiliated with Lashkar-eTaiba.

They said one of the militants, identified as Abu Talha, a foreigner, was acting as the commander of Lashkar in Bandipore and was involved in many militancy related activities.

The other slain militant, identified as Kaiser Manzoor Bhat of Bandipore, had joined militant ranks last year.

He was part of groups involved in planning and executing terror attacks in the area,” a spokespers­on said.

“Several terror crime cases were registered against him for his involvemen­t in terror crimes.” According to the spokespers­on, incriminat­ing material, including goods bearing Pakistani marks as well as arms and ammunition, have been recovered from the slain militant’s possession. “All the incriminat­ing materials have been taken into records for the purpose of investigat­ion and to probe his complicity in other terror crimes,” the officer said.

The encounter broke out when the security forces launched a search operation in Bandipora district of north Kashmir.

While one militant was killed on Sunday during the gunfight in Lawdara village, about 55km from Srinagar, another was killed the day after.
