At 9.9°C, Pathankot records season’s coldest day so far

CHANDIGARH/ROHTAK: Pathankot in Punjab on Monday recorded the season’s coldest day so far at 9.9°C as maximum temperatur­es dropped sharply in the region.

The day temperatur­es in the plains of Punjab and Haryana dropped between 7 to 11 degrees below normal limits, a meteorolog­ical department official said.

Chandigarh, like many other places in the two states, was enveloped by fog in the morning and its maximum temperatur­e settled 11 degrees below normal, he said.

Similarly, Pathankot’s maximum temperatur­e settled 10 notches below normal, he added.

The other coldest places in Punjab included Bathinda, which recorded a maximum temperatur­e of 11.3°C followed by Adampur at 12.2°C and Halwara at 13.3°C.

Amritsar recorded a high of 14°C, down seven notches against normal and Patiala’s maximum temperatur­e settled at 13.4°C, eight degrees below normal limits.

Ludhiana, too, experience­d a cold day at 13.7°C, eight degrees below normal.

RAIN LIKELY IN HRY FROM DECEMBER 19-22

Cold wave conditions intensifie­d in Haryana on Monday with minimum temperatur­es recorded at 8.4°C in Hisar, 7.3°C in Sirsa, 8.8°C in Rohtak and 8.7°C in Bhiwani.

The night temperatur­es settled in the range of 8°C to 9°C at most places.

The MeT department has also predicted moderate to light rain from December 19 to 22 in most parts of the state.

Experts at the Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultur­al University said the rain will bring more cold in the entire state. Meteorolog­y and agricultur­e department head at the varsity, ML Khichar, said there are good chances of rain from December 19 to 22 in the state and the minimum temperatur­e is expected to drop by two degrees.

“We have directed the farmers to complete the water cycle in their fields as there is no requiremen­t during the rain,” he added.

Meanwhile, fog reduced visibility at many places in the two states including Amritsar, Bathinda, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Ambala and Hisar.
