DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand police’s cyber cell arrested two men, including a Nigerian citizen, from Delhi for allegedly duping a Dehradun resident of Rs 1.12 crore on the pretext of an online lottery of 1,900 Euros, said police officials.

The arrests were made during a probe into a case registered with the cyber cell in which the victim, Pradeep Kumar Jaiswal, had alleged that he was duped by an unidentified accused. He alleged that the accused trapped him by sending a message on his mobile phone stating he had won an online lottery worth 1,900 Euros which equals to about Rs 1.50 lakh.

Riddhim Aggarwal, deputy inspector general, state cyber cell, said Jaiswal believed in the lottery win, after which the accused trapped him on transferring the money on the pretext of procedures needed to transfer the lottery amount to his bank account.

“Among the two accused, the Nigerian, identified as Victor Chidubem, was the main accused while the Indian accused Amana Thaimei, a resident of Manipur, helped him by providing his bank account to him for the fraud. Victor, on the pretext of procedures, got Jaiswal transfer Rs 1.12 crore on various occasions last year,” said Aggarwal.

Even after transferring the money, when the accused dillydallied on transferring the lottery win amount, Jaiswal understood that he had been duped and lodged a complaint with the cyber cell on December 12 last year.

“When police investigated the bank accounts used by the accused to receive the money, they were traced in Delhi. Police also found that the money from those accounts were withdrawn from different ATMs in Delhi only. They then checked the CCTV footages of those ATMs and traced Victor,” she said. Later during the interrogation, he confessed to the crime and named Amana as his acquaintance .

“He too was arrested based on Victor’s input and the two were then brought to Dehradun on Saturday. Probe is on in the case to get more details,” said the police official.
