RUDRAPUR: A 39-year-old property dealer and councillor, who was kidnapped from Preet Vihar colony of Rudrapur in US Nagar district, was released in Ghaziabad on Saturday evening, police said on Sunday.

“Eight police teams were formed to recover the property dealer. They were chasing kidnappers since the day one. He was released due to continuous heavy pressure of the police in Ghaziabad and nearby areas,” Barinderjit Singh, senior superintendent of police, US Nagar, told media persons on Sunday.

Amit Mishra, a resident of Preet Vihar colony and a councillor of the Rudrapur municipal corporation, went out on Wednesday evening with his scooty but didn’t return. On Thursday, kidnappers demanded Rs 20 lakh as ransom from his mother Sarvesh Mishra over the phone, police said.

His mother lodged an FIR with Rudrapur police station on Friday evening. She said that she had received a call from an unknown number demanding Rs 20-lakh as ransom. The person who was calling threatened her not inform the police, said an official. Police had registered a case of kidnapping under section 364A of IPC on Friday on the complaint of Mishra’s mother and conducted raids various parts of western UP to recover Mishra, said official.

Mishra’s family had arranged for Rs 10 lakh and went to Ghaziabad on Saturday to hand over the amount to kidnappers to release him; police personnel were with them in civil uniform. But kidnappers had smelt the planning of police and released the property dealer and fled, police said.

“Mishra was released near PVR, Rajnagar of Ghaziabad. He called his friend from the phone of a cab driver and informed him after the release. We are conducting raids to nab the kidnappers,” said Singh. “Six persons had kidnapped me after beating me up on Wednesday. I had given him some intoxication, so I fell unconscious. I was kept in a flat in Ghaziabad. Every time kidnappers used to threaten to kill me if ransom is not given,” said Amit Mishra, property dealer at the police station.

Mishra was present when the US Nagar SSP was addressing median persons.
