SRINAGAR: Two militants, an army jawan and a policeman were killed in an encounter with militants in south Kahsmir’s Pulwama district on Tuesday, just a day after three Hizb militants were killed in neighbouring Shopian.

Officials said the gunfight started after a joint party of security forces cordoned Zantrag Khrew area of Awantipora in Pulwama after getting information about presence of militants. They said the militants in hiding opened fire on them triggering an exchange of fire between the warring sides.

“Special police officer Shahbaz Ahmad from Rajouri district and an sepoy Rahul rainswal died in the encounter. The operation is still underway,” said deputy inspector general of police, south Kashmir, Atul Kumar Goel.

However, locals and eyewitnesses suspect the militants might have gotten away. “Security forces have been conducting searches but there has been no exchange of fire,” said a local.

This was the second major encounter in Kashmir in the past two days. On Monday, three militants were killed in Shopian, including top Hizbul Mujhahideen commander Wasim, Adil Bashir and Jehangir. Wasim was involved in the killing of eight people, including four security men in the valley.
