Two militants, CRPF man killed in Srinagar encounter

SRINAGAR : Two militants and a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) man were killed in a shootout on the outskirts of Srinagar city on Wednesday.

The encounter broke out after three scooter-borne militants opened fire on CRPF personnel posted at a mobile checking unit in Shalteng in Parampora, Kashmir Zone inspector general of police Vijay Kumar said. Security forces retaliated and killed two militants, he said, adding that the third militant, who was injured, was captured when he was trying to flee from the spot.

CRPF jawan Ramesh Ranjan died after being injured in the attack.

This is the first encounter in Srinagar district since the abrogation of Article 370 in J&K on August 5 last year.

The Kashmir IG said the slain militants have been identified as Zia Ur Rehman Wani of the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Khateeb Ahmad of the Hizbul Mujahideen. The captured militant is Umar Fayyaz of the Islamic State, he added.

Special director general CRPF, Zulfikar Hassan, said a special naka was set up near Lawaypora on Srinagar - Baramulla highway. “Around 11 am, three people came on a scooter from the Baramulla side. They were stopped by the security personnel as they were not wearing helmets. As one of the constables started checking, one of the two pillion riders got down and opened fire. “In spite of being hit in the head, the jawan retaliated. Other personnel also retaliated, resulting in the killing of two terrorists. The third militant, who was injured, has been captured and shifted to a hospital, ”he added.
