SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir police on Wednesday said 20 militants had been killed in the Union territory since January and security agencies were prepared so as to ensure a peaceful summer.

Director general of police Dilbag Singh, in a press conference, said they had prepared a plan to ensure a peaceful summer.

Singh said the forces had killed 20 militants in J&K in different operations and had also busted several modules of militants across Kashmir. “In January, many successful operations were carried out. Earlier, a terrorist was captured in an operation underway in Budgam, Khrew and Tral.’’

Singh said recently a group of Jaish-e-Mohammad militants who had come from Pakistan were killed in Jammu. “Three terrorists were killed in an encounter when they were stopped at a checkpoint,” he said.

He said the arms and ammunition with the militants suggested they were planning to carry out a big attack.

“Eight weapons, grenades and a readymade improvised explosive device was recovered from them,’’ he said, adding that whenever a Jaish-e-Mohammad group enters India from Pakistan they bring high-caliber weapons.

He said Jaish militants have two types of communication systems and are in direct touch with their handlers. “Ikcom and Thuraya sets are used to maintain direct contact with handlers in Pakistan.’’

DGP Singh said the city’s population and administration was being targeted by militants but the security was strong enough to stop the attacks.

“We have arrested many modules and are trying to unveil the module behind the Pratap Park Grenade attack on Sunday.”
