CHANDIGARH: Admitting that crimes against women in Haryana ‘slightly increased’ last year, home minister Anil Vij on Monday informed the Vidhan Sabha that strict action will be taken against the officials concerned if any such case falls flat in the court due to lopsided investigation.

Responding to a barrage of questions Congress MLAs Geeta Bhukkal, Jagbir Singh Malik, Chiranjeev Rao, Aftab Ahmed and Ishwar Singh raised on the issue, Vij said the rate of crimes ‘did slightly increase’ against women and other weaker sections of the society in Haryana.

When Aftab Ahmed drew the attention of the minister towards dip in conviction rate, Vij said he had directed the authorities concerned to take strict action in the event of cases pertaining to crimes against women do not result in conviction of the accused due to improper investigations.

In 2017, as many as 9,989 cases of crimes against women were registered, while in 2018 the number of cases lodged in this category rose by 27% to 12,691. Vij said in 2019, 13,104 cases (3.25% increase) of crimes against women were lodged. However, cases of crimes against children saw a decline of 3.8% in 2019, when 3,870 cases were registered against the 4,022 figure of previous year. The home minister said crimes against other weaker sections rose from 804 cases in 2017 to 1,097 in 2019. He attributed this increase to ‘free registration of cases’ and increased awareness amongst the Scheduled Caste community of the state.

“There is no feeling of insecurity in the minds of the Scheduled Castes or weaker sections. All communities are living in an atmosphere of brotherhood and harmony,” Vij said in the written statement laid on the floor of the House.
