BATHINDA: As part of an imagebuilding execise for the police force, Moga district authorities have started deputing designated cops in every village.

Moga senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harmanbir Singh Gill said 445 police officials, including inspector, sub-inspector, assistant sub-inspector, head constable and constable, have been posted as village police officers (VPOs).

Of the total VPOs, 323 have been deputed at villages, while 122 will serve at wards in Moga, Dharamkot, Baghapurana and

Nihal Singh Wala sub-divisions.

Gill said these VPOs would visit their designated village at least twice a week to understand the issues and concerns of the community.

He added that the VPO would be a “public-friendly cop” who will not only solve the grievances related with the police department, but also help with issues concerning other departments. The SSP said these cops will also keep tabs and gather information on activities and whereabouts of smugglers, proclaimed offenders and criminals.

Moreover, deputy superintendent of police (DSPs) of each sub-division have been deputed as as halqa officers, who will directly supervise the working of VPOs and hold meetings with them on Saturdays.

Progress reports will be submitted to the SSP every Monday, said Gill. Meanwhile, names and phone numbers of the VPOs will be shared with the people on the Punjab Police website.
