SPIKE 40-year-old woman dies due to Covid-19 in Kashmir, death toll 18; 31 patients recover

SRINAGAR/JAMMU: A 40-year-old woman died due to Covid-19 at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinagar on Wednesday, taking the death toll in Jammu and Kashmir to 18, officials said.

Kashmir’s Anantnag, was suffering from necrotisin­g pancreatit­is and had tested positive for the virus on May 12.

With this, the number deaths due to coronaviru­s has risen to 18– 16 in Kashmir division and two in Jammu division. This is the seventh death in Kashmir valley in the past five days.

Seventy-three more people have tested positive for the disease in the UT, taking the count to 1,390, a government spokespers­on said.

Of the fresh infections, 36 are from Jammu division and 37 from Kashmir division.

In Kashmir, new cases were reported from Kulgam, Anantnag,

Bandipora, Baramulla, Kupwara and Pulwama districts. The tally has risen to 1,188 in the Valley. A jump of 17 cases was recorded in Kupwara while there were single digit jumps in rest of the districts.

Dr Salim Khan, nodal officer for Covid-19 at GMC, Srinagar said,”17 people tested positive at CD Hospital of which two were pregnant woman. A woman has already undergone caesarian section.”

In Jammu division, a major jump of 20 cases was reported in Jammu district while seven other districts witnessed single digit jumps, taking the count to 202.

A government spokespers­on said 31 more patients have recovered and were discharged from various hospitals, including four from Jammu and 27 from Kashmir.

So far, 612 patients in Kashmir and 66 in Jammu division have recovered. At present, active cases in Kashmir stand at 560 and 134 are in Jammu.

Till date, 1.22 lakh people in contact with suspected cases have been put under surveillan­ce— 33,113 in home quarantine, 86 in hospital quarantine and 19,892 under home surveillan­ce.

Besides these, 69,161 people have completed their 28-day surveillan­ce period.
