Bollywood beauties flaunt cherry red pout

Acherry red lipstick or stainer has that elusive quality that makes you look done in a matter of a few seconds. What’s best — it makes one’s teeth look whiter, plus it’s super creamy and doesn’t accentuate fine lines on the lips. Back in the day, the red pout had edgy connotations, and it was said to be poet Sylvia Plath’s go-to lipstick in the ’50s, when she lived in New York. Cut to present, this classic pout has emerged to be the instant look-maker for our Bollywood actors during the lockdown. From Priyanka Chopra Jonas to Kriti Sanon, actors have been opting for this statement lip as they quarantine. And why not! It instantly brightens up your mood and is a metaphor for empowerment.

Designer Pria Kataaria Puri links it to the French girl cool. “It’s pretty much how a section of French women dress up — a pair of jeans, a shirt, messy hair, no makeup and red lips. When your face is without makeup or foundation and you just add a pop of colour like a cherry red lip, the result is timelessly chic. To rock this look, it is best to underplay everything else and let your lips do all the talking,” says Puri.

Stylist Isha Bhansali hails it as not too “femme fatale-ish but a strong look”. “The reason why so many women like it is because it lies somewhere in between the two. You want to look powerful and not too girlie. Hues like fresh cherry, deep cherry and burgundy suit Indian skin type, and the look is low-maintenance. I’d recommend pulling it off with a stainer like Kriti Sanon’s look. Don’t make it too glossy but opt for a deep cherry or matt,” says Bhansali.
