ARRESTED AT LAST

Vikas Dubey’s arrest in Madhya Pradesh capped a frantic hunt that began in Kanpur in the early morning of Friday, July 3 after he and his men carried out an audacious attack on a police team that went to arrest him

JULY 3

■Dubey and his men, tipped off by insiders within the police, lay waiting for a police raiding party. At 1.30am, from rooftops, they open fire, killing one deputy superintendent of police, three sub-inspectors and four constables

■Shortly after, they use several motorcycles to make their escape from Bikru village. As the group split up, Dubey and some of his accomplices reach Kanpur’s Shivli area where they will stay for the next two days ■Later in the day, Kanpur police gun down Dubey’s two aides Prem Prakash Pandey and Atul Dubey and recovered one pistol from their possession. Reward of ₹50,000 announced for Dubey’s arrest.

JULY 4

Manhunt launched for Dubey and his 20 aides. Station officer of Chaubeypur Vinay Tewari suspended for leaking information. Administration razes Dubey’s sprawling house at Bikru village, where the shootout took place.

JULY 5

A key accomplice of Dubey arrested after being shot. Later, Agnihotri’s wife and two others also held for helping Dubey escape. Agnihotri reveals during interrogation that Dubey was informed by a cop of Chaubeypur police station. Reward money on Dubey’s increased to ₹1lakh.

JULY 6

Slain deputy SP’s daughter releases letter written by her father alleging he alerted senior cops on March 14 that Chaubeypur police station officer was protecting Dubey and inaction could “lead to a major untoward incident”. Reward for Dubey’s arrest raised to ₹2.5 lakh

JULY 7

The senior officer, former SSP of Kanpur Anant Deo Tewari, removed from post of DIG UP STF. Entire staff of 68 police personnel of Chaubeypur police station shifted. Additional chief secretary, Home, Awanish Awasthi increases reward for Dubey’s arrest to ₹5 lakh.

JULY 8

■Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) kills Amar Dubey, one of the closest aides of Dubey, in an ambush in Hamirpur. Nine others including ex Chaubeypur SO Vinay Tewari and sub-inspector KK Sharma arrested.
