State logs 24 deaths, 987 fresh coronaviru­s cases

LUDHIANA/AMRITSAR/SANGRUR/ BATHINDA/PATIALA/JALANDHAR: Punjab on Sunday reported 24 more Covid-related fatalities, pushing the death toll to 586, and 987 fresh cases, taking the positive patients’ tally to 23,903.

Ten deaths were reported in Ludhiana, four in Amritsar, three in Bathinda, two each in Kapurthala and Jalandhar and one each in Barnala, Sangrur, Mohali and Gurdaspur districts.

Besides, 15,319 patients have been cured and there are 7,998 active cases in the state, according to the bulletin.

IN LUDHIANA, 224 FOUND INFECTED

Besides 10 deaths, Ludhiana reported 224 fresh cases. Among the dead was 19-year-old girl who tried to escape from the Covid care centre of Ludhiana civil hospital by jumping off the first floor of the building on August 7.

Five patients, four from Amritsar and one from Gurdaspur district, succumbed to the virus at local hospitals. Amritsar reported 69 fresh cases, Gurdaspur 28 and Tarn Taran six.

An 80-year-old man died in Sangrur, besides 37 people contracted the virus. Of these, 16 are from Sangrur, 7 from Longowal, 4 from Sherpur, 2 each from Sunam, Malerkotla, Bhawanigar­h and one each from Moonak, Kauhrian, Dhuri and Amargarh blocks.

Bathinda reported 56 fresh cases, Ferozepur 15 Mansa nine and Muktsar seven. With 79 new cases, Jalandhar district has crossed the 3,000-mark of patients. The district also reported one death.

Patiala reported 152 new cases. Of these, 86 are from Patiala, 8 from Rajpura, 32 from Nabha, 6 from Samana, 3 from Sanour and 17 are from various villages.

Also, Mohali reported 45 fresh cases of the infection.
