Surge sans purge: 2,110 infections, 61 deaths in a day

LUDHIANA/PATIALA/AMRITSAR/ BATHINDA/JALANDHAR: With consecutiv­e days of record highs in new cases of coronaviru­s, Punjab on Monday hit another grim milestone of 2,110 fresh infections, its highest single-day spike in cases so far, pushing the tally to 65,583. The death toll from the disease in the state mounted to 1,923 with 61 more fatalities, according to a medical bulletin released by the state government.

Punjab surpassed its previous single-day maximum of 1,946 novel coronaviru­s cases registered on Sunday.

Mohali surpassed Ludhiana, the worst-affected district in the state, in terms of fatalities on Monday, recording 15 deaths. Ludhiana reported 10 deaths, followed by seven from Patiala, five in Moga, four in Hoshiarpur, three each in Jalandhar, SBS Nagar and Rupnagar, two each in Amritsar and Fatehgarh Sahib and one each in Barnala, Bathinda, Faridkot, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Muktsar, and Tarn Taran, according to the media bulletin.

Ludhiana topped the chart in positive cases, reporting 338 infections, followed by Jalandhar 210, Mohali 176, Amritsar 157, Patiala 137, Gurdaspur 128, Muktsar 126, Rupnagar 115, Bathinda 106, Pathankot 96 and Hoshiarpur 86.

As per the bulletin, 1,565 patients were discharged from

hospitals across the state after recovering from the infection.

So far 47,020 people have recovered from Covid-19 in Punjab, where the number of active cases stands at 16,640, according to the bulletin. Besides, 75 patients in the state are still said to be on ventilator support 534 are on oxygen support.

Punjab to provide 50,000 free Covid care kits to active patients

Chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Monday said his government will provide 50,000 free Covid care kits to active patients in hospitals and home isolation to ensure better care.

The kits, costing ₹1,700 each, include an oximeter, digital thermomete­r, face masks and necessary medication.

The move is part of the wider state government endeavour to ensure that all patients get complete medical care.

Disclosing this, a spokespers­on said that the specially designed kit would also include a steamer,a hand sanitizer, besides 60 giloy tablets, 30 Vitamin C tablets and four vitamin D3 pills.
