MOHALI: Questioning of 26 police officials posted in the security of former Punjab director general of police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini, who is on the run in the Balwant Singh Multani murder case, revealed that he left Chandigarh on August 12 along with his security cover but ordered escort Gypsy to retreat from Karnal bypass.

During questioning, the special investigation team (SIT) also discovered that Saini was at his Panchsheel Park residence in Delhi from August 12 to August 22 and asked his security staff and driver to return to Chandigarh. Saini’s whereabouts are still unknown.

Since August 22, the SIT is continuously conducting raids at various places in Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal and Rajasthan to apprehend Saini.

Multani, a CITCO employee, was allegedly picked by two officials in 1991 after a terrorist attack on Saini (who was Chandigarh SSP then) in which four cops deputed in his security were killed. The police later claimed that Multani escaped from its custody in Qadian, Gurdaspur. Former DSP Baldev Singh, Satvir Singh (ex-inspector), Har Sahai Sharma, Anokh Singh (ex-SI) besides Jagir and Kuldip Singh were named in the case.

On Saturday, Mohali district court issued arrest warrant against Saini and directed the state police to produce him before the court by September 25. The former top cop was found missing from his Chandigarh house when police went to serve him the summons informing about addition of Section 302 (murder) of the IPC to the FIR registered against him as prime accused in alleged disappearance and elimination of Mulatni. Summons was pasted outside Saini’s house on August 22 when he, according to statements of his security officials, was present at his Delhi residence.

SIT officials said all 26 cops in Saini’s security, including three inspector-level officials and four sub-inspectors have joined the investigations.
