State reports a new high of 2,628 Covid cases, 68 deaths

AMRITSAR/LUDHIANA/PATIALA/ JALANDHAR/BATHINDA: Punjab on Sunday reported 68 more Covid-related fatalities, taking the death toll to 2,356. The state also witnessed the highest single-day spike of 2,628 new coronaviru­s cases, taking the tally to 79,679.

The state has been reporting 2,000 cases a day since September 7, and has recorded 14,096 new cases in less than a week.

Amritsar topped the chart with 11 deaths, followed by 10 from Patiala, six each from Bathinda and Jalandhar, five from Ludhiana, four from Kapurthala and three each from Fazilka, Hoshiarpur, Mohali, Pathankot and Sangrur, two each from Rupnagar, Moga, Mansa and one each from Barnala, Faridkot, Gurdaspur, SBS Nagar and Tarn Taran, according to the media bulletin released by the state government.

Mohali reported 433 fresh cases, Patiala 327, Ludhiana 274,

Gurdaspur 260, Jalandhar 252, Amritsar 188, Bathinda 104 and Hoshiarpur 79, the bulletin said. A total of 2,151 patients were discharged after recovering from infection, the bulletin said, adding that there are 19,787 active cases in the state. A total of 57,536 people have been cured of the infection in the state so far.

Recovered Cong MLA donates plasma

Congress MLA from Moga, Harjot Kamal, who recovered from Covid-19, donated his plasma at the Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital (GGSMCH), Faridkot, on Sunday. He was tested positive on August 11. He is the first MLA or MP from Punjab to have come forward to donate his plasma.

Kamal said, “It is our responsibi­lity to save the lives of people. Also, I decided to donate my plasma to encourage other recovered patients to come forward for the cause.” He also appealed to the people to follow the instructio­ns issued by the health department.
