AMRITSAR : Police on Saturday claimed to have busted a gang of smugglers from Madhya Pradesh that was allegedly involved in supplying of illegal arms and ammunition to Punjab-based gangsters and arrested two persons in this connection.

The police also seized twelve .32 bore country-made pistols and 15 magazines from the accused identified as Mahesh Selotia and Jaggu.

Punjab director general of police (DGP) Dinkar Gupta said an operation was carried out under the supervision of Amritsar senior superintendent of police ( SSP rural) Dhruv Dahiya.

Selotia and Jaggu were nabbed from their native villages in MP’s Khargone district by a team led by DSP Gurinder Nagra, Gupta said in the press release.

“Raids in Khargone were conducted after investigation into the recent seizure of four .32 bore country made pistols by Amritsar police. It was revealed that the gang was led by one Rahul. The gang has been involved in smuggling several major weapon consignments to Punjab-based gangsters. It was also the source of a consignment of six .32 bore pistols that were seized by the Patiala police in September,” Gupta added.

The gang kingpin was in contact with several gangsters and hardliners lodged in Punjab’s jails, he said, adding that questioning of the arrested accused is still underway to unravel their complete network. Rahul is absconding, the police said.
