Get data of all Jallianwal­a martyrs: Capt to Channi

AMRITSAR : The Punjab government has traced family members of only 29 on the list of 492 martyrs of Jallianwal­a Bagh massacre available with the district administra­tion, two years after the centenary of the tragic event was marked in 2019.

Members of these 29 families, from Amritsar and four other districts of the state, were honoured during a state-level function held to lay the foundation stone of the Jallianwal­a Bagh Centenary Memorial Park in the posh locality of Ranjit Avenue.

Chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh laid the foundation stone of the park, virtually, with an emotional tribute to the unsung heroes of the freedom struggle. “The sky frequents daily to weep here, The arrows still sting in Punjab’s heart...” he recited from Rakshanda Jalil’s poem on the massacre. Tourism and cultural affairs minister Charanjit Singh Channi honoured the kin with a kalash (urn) and a shawl.

Noting that the exact number of those killed in the massacre was still not known, the CM asked Channi to compile relevant data. He also announced a Jallianwal­a Bagh Chair at Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) and a literary festival dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives in one of the world’s biggest humanitari­an tragedy.

The CM recalled his visit to the Cellular Jail at Kala Pani, where there were names of many Punjabis, who nobody knew and directed Channi to also get the informatio­n researched and compiled.

The Jallianwal­a Bagh Centenary Memorial Park, to come up over 4,490 sq m at Amrit Anand Park in Amritsar will stand out as a remembranc­e for the future generation­s.

To be built at Rs 3.5 crore, the sacred memorial will have soil brought by kin of martyrs or panchayats, sarpanches and councillor­s. The martyrs were identified as Khushi Ram, Hari Ram, Sunder Singh, Vasu Mal, Jai Narian, Gopal Singh, Tara Chand, Bishan Dass, Bakshish Singh, Prem Singh, Bibi Har Kaur, Diyal Singh, Sunder Singh, Thakur Singh, Boorh Singh, Boorh Singh, Jhanda Singh, Ganda Singh, Natha Singh, Lachman Singh, Bishan Singh, Lachman Singh, Bawa Singh, Ami Chand, Chet Singh, Buddha Singh, Sohan Singh, Tara Singh and Ishar Singh.
