AMRITSAR: An Amritsar court has acquitted gangster Jagdeep Singh, alias Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, and three others in a case registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including attempt to murder, due to lack of evidence.

The court of additional session judge (ASJ) Sandeep Singh Bajwa observed that the prosecution miserably failed to prove its case against all the accused.

This is the second time in last two months when Bhagwanpuria — who is facing dozens of criminal cases, including murder, extortion, kidnapping — and is currently lodged in Patiala jail, was absolved of murder bid charge.

A case under Sections 307 (murder bid), 323-324 (causing hurt), 148 (rioting), 149 and 506 (intimidation) of the IPC and 25-27-54-59 of the Arms Act was registered against Bhagwanpuria at A division police station on September 24, 2014 for allegedly assaulting a college president, Gurinderdeep Singh, and his friends in Amritsar in 2014.

Mandeep Singh, Shamsher Singh and Jobanjit Singh were booked in the case.

Gurinder, who was elected president of Guru Nanak Dev University College in Verka, said he and his friend Simarpreet Singh were attacked with sharpedged weapons.

“Nothing incriminating has come on record against the accused persons. There is even not an iota of evidence on record,” the judge observed on Thursday.

In December last year, a local court had acquitted Bhagwanpuria and four others in a case registered at Mattewal police station, in which he was accused of attacking a police party during an encounter. Bhagwanpuria was arrested after the encounter and another case was registered at Kathunangal police station.

In January last year, he was awarded 12-year imprisonment in the Kathunangal case.
