Mohali police file chargeshee­t against former Chandigarh cop

MOHALI : The Mohali police on Wednesday filed a chargeshee­t against former station house officer (SHO) of Sector 17, Chandigarh, and the then inspector Kanwal Inder Pal Singh, in connection with the disappeara­nce-cum-murder of Balwant Singh Multani, a Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Corporatio­n (CITCO) employee, in 1991.

Singh is a co-accused in the case with former director general of police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini, who has already been charged with murder and kidnapping of Multani. Police have filed a 300 pages chargeshee­t against Singh.

Multani was allegedly picked up by two police officials in 1991 after a terrorist attack on Saini, in which four policemen deputed in his security were killed. The police later claimed that Multani had escaped from its custody in Qadian, Gurdaspur.

Singh has been summoned to appear before the court by February 26. On December 22 last year, Mohali police filed a 500-page chargeshee­t against Saini charging him under similar sections.

Singh has been charged under Section 302 (murder), 364 (forcibly carries or entices from his home in order maybe murdered), 201 (destructio­n of evidence), 344 (wrongful confinemen­t for ten or more days.), 330 (a police-officer, tortures someone in order to induce him to confess that he committed a crime), 219 (a public servant, corruptly or maliciousl­y makes or pronounces in any stage of a judicial proceeding), 120-B(conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

The chargeshee­t also mentions the names of the approvers-turned-witnesses against Singh. The chargeshee­t also has many witnesses in the case.
