Security beefed up after attacks in Srinagar
The IGP said its crucial to enhance security surveillance of vital locations
SRINAGAR: After two back-toback militant attacks in Srinagar over the last three days, the Jammu and Kashmir police have decided to conduct surprise cordon and searches at crowded places and establish flash checkpoints in an attempt to pre-empt any more militant attacks in the city.
Kashmir inspector general of police Vijay Kumar chaired a security review meeting on the city’s security grid at the police control room.
The review, which was also attended by Srinagar sector Central Reserve Police Force inspector general Charu Sinha and other senior officers of police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and SSB, was held a day after two unarmed policemen were killed in a brazen militant attack in a crowded Barzalla-Baghat area of Srinagar. On Wednesday militants had also opened fire on the son of a famous restaurant owner near UNMOGIP office in Srinagar injuring him seriously.
Police spokesperson Manoj Kumar Sheeri said that the focus of the meeting was recent attacks by terrorists in the Srinagar City and the security measures to counter such terrorist attacks.
“The participating officers presented an overview of the steps initiated by them in their respective areas to counter such attacks and other challenges faced at the ground level. IGP Kashmir was also briefed about the detailed security measures put in place to counter such attacks and for the maintenance of peace and security particularly for tourists as it is expected that a large number of tourists will visit Valley in the coming summer season,” he said.
The IGP Kumar told participating officers that it was of crucial importance to enhance security surveillance of all vital establishments and locations besides to take care of vulnerable persons to thwart away the nefarious designs of terrorists and ensure peaceful atmosphere in Srinagar city.
He told officers to strengthen the general security grid and to ensure better synergy and coordination among themselves and other sister agencies working at the ground level so that terrorists and anti-national elements do not get any chance to disturb the present peaceful atmosphere prevailing in the Srinagar city.
“He also highlighted the importance of round-the-clock checkpoints and nakas at strategic locations, surprise (flash) checkpoints, surprise limited CASO in crowded places, placing cut-off points on exit routes immediately after such incidents and dominating from high reaches use of drones to check the movement of elements inimical to peace,” the spokesperson quoted Kumar. Officers have been instructed to enhance surveillance.
Two LeT associates arrested from Bandipore
The Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested two Lashkar-eToiba associates from Bandipore on Saturday. A police spokesperson said they arrested two terrorist associates, Abid Waza of Bandipora and Bashir Ahmad Gojer of Malangam Bandipora, who were linked with proscribed terror outfit LeT and recovered incriminating materials from their possession.
“Acting on specific inputs, Bandipora police along with 14RR and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) established a joint checkpoint near Papachan Bandipora Bridge and apprehended two terrorist associates linked with proscribed terrorist outfit LeT,” the spokesman said.
“They were involved in providing shelter, logistic and other support to the active terrorists in the area. Besides, they were tasked by their handlers to carry grenade attacks on security forces in Bandipora,” the spokesperson said.
He added that the two live hand grenades had been recovered from their possession.
“All recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and action.”
