HC extends interim relief to Umranagal from appearance

FARIDKOT : The Punjab and Haryana High Court has extended the interim relief given to suspended inspector general of police (IGP) Paramraj Singh Umranagal from appearance in a Faridkot court in connection with the supplement­ary chargeshee­t filed by the Punjab Police’s special investigat­ion team (SIT) against him in the 2015 Behbal Kalan firing case.

Umaranagal was scheduled to appear in the court of Faridkot judicial magistrate Suresh Kumar on March 1.

On January 15, the SIT had filed a supplement­ary chargeshee­t in the case against the then director general of police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini and

Umarananga­l, naming them as the main conspirato­rs, following which they were summoned to appear in the court on February 9. The judicial magistrate had issued bailable arrest warrants against both after they failed to appear. However, the warrants against Umaranagal were withdrawn after the high court granted him exemption from appearance on February 9.

Order on Saini, suspended IGP’s bail pleas reserved

Saini and Umaranagal had moved the high court seeking anticipato­ry bail after petitions for the same were dismissed by the in the Faridkot district and sessions court.

The high court bench has reserved the order for March 1.

Umaranagal’s counsel had argued that the bail applicatio­n was heard by the co-ordinate bench of the court. The next date of hearing in the Faridkot trial court is March 1 and it was prayed that the February 9 HC order be continued for the next date of hearing, he added.

Justice Alka Sarin said in view of the fact that orders in the anticipato­ry bail applicatio­n have been reserved, the February 9 order be continued for the next date of hearing in the trial court on March 1 and the matter is adjourned to March 2.
