Terrorist, JCO killed in encounter in Rajouri

Subedar Ram Singh was shot during a search op, he succumbed to his injuries later

JAMMU: A junior commission­ed officer and a terrorist were killed during an encounter in Thanamandi area of Rajouri district on Thursday. A joint search party was fired upon in Danna village by terrorists, said a defence spokespers­on.

JAMMU: A junior commission­ed officer and a terrorist were killed during an encounter in Thanamandi area of Rajouri district on Thursday.

Defence spokespers­on Lt Col Devender Anand said that a joint search party of the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police led by junior commission­ed officer (JCO) was fired upon in Danna village. In the ensuing gunfight, one terrorist was neutralise­d, while Subedar Ram Singh suffered a gunshot wound. The officer was provided immediate first aid and evacuated to the nearest hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries,” said Colonel Anand.

The 46-year-old JCO belonged to Salana village of Pauri Garhwal of Uttarakhan­d.

He is survived by his wife, son and daughter. “Subedar Ram Singh was a brave and highly motivated soldier. The nation will always remain indebted to him for his supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty,” added the spokespers­on .

On August 6, security forces killed two terrorists in Pangai area of Thanamandi and on August 10, Jammu and Kashmir Police identified one of the two slain terrorists as Ramees Ahmad Tantray of Ramnagri in Shopian district

In the past few weeks, several encounters have taken place in Rajouri sector — Daddal in Nowshera, Sunderbani and Pangai in Thanamandi followed by Thursday’s encounter at Karyote.

“All these were fresh groups, which had infiltrate­d the area recently,” DGP Dilbag Singh said. The DGP also said that infiltrati­on of terrorists from launch pads across the border has resumed.
