PM: Growing startups reflection of new India
NEW DELHI: Indian startups have been creating wealth even during the Covid-19 pandemic, with new entrepreneurs emerging even from smaller cities and towns, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his monthly radio broadcast on Sunday, as he noted that the number of unicorns in the country reached 100 on May 5.
“The total valuation of these unicorns is more than $330 billion, that is, more than ₹25 lakh crore,” Modi said in the Mann ki Baat programme. “Certainly, this is a matter of pride for every Indian.” Unicorns are startups that are worth $1 billion or more.
“You will also be surprised to know that out of our total unicorns, 44 came up last year. In the 3-4 months this year, 14 more unicorns were formed,” the Prime Minister said.
“This means that even in this phase of the global pandemic, our startups have been creating wealth and value.”
“Something I consider more significant is that the world of startups reflects the spirit of New India,” he said. “Today, startups are not confined to metro cities, but entrepreneurs are also emerging from small cities and towns.”
Modi also stressed the importance of mentoring in startups. “Today, we have ample mentors who are creating a support system for startups in the country. I am confident that in the future, India will reach new heights in the startup world.”
In his 89th Mann ki Baat episode, Modi said India is a rich treasure trove of many languages, scripts and dialects. “Varied attire, cuisine and culture in different regions is our hallmark,” he said. “As a nation, this diversity strengthens us and keeps us united.”
Highlighting examples of diversity, he narrated the journey of Kalpana, who has recently passed her class 10th examination in Karnataka. “The very special thing about Kalpana’s success is that she did not know Kannada till some time ago, but she not only learned it in three months, but also proved it by scoring 92 marks.”
Modi also cited the example of Shripati Tudu, who hails from Purulia and is a professor of Santhali at the Sidho-KaanoBirsa University in West Bengal. “Tudu has prepared a version of the country’s Constitution in his native Ol Chiki script for the Santhali community,” he said. “This is a living example of the spirit of Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat (one India, great India).”
The upcoming International Yoga Day on June 21 will be celebrated in 75 significant locations across the country, keeping in mind the festivities of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, or the 75th year of India’s Independence, said the PM, who is an avid practitioner.
“This year, Indian missions across the world are taking part in a creative event called Guardian Ring, where the movement of the sun will be celebrated,” he added. “From east to west, at sunrise, Indian missions will commence yoga practices.”
He also encouraged citizens to support women self-help groups and “promote women’s empowerment and give momentum to the Atmanirbhar Bharat abhiyan (self-reliant India mission)”.
