When a candle is about to burn out, it flares bright: Sinha

Jammu and Kashmir lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha on Monday compared militancy in Kashmir to a candle that flares just before it is extinguished.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event, Sinha said, “Religious leaders and the people of Kashmir are condemning targeted killing of civilians in the Valley. When a candle is about to burn out, its flame flares bright. This (militancy) is taking its last gasps.”

He said that some elements from across the border were trying to disturb peace in Jammu and Kashmir.

“They want the return of those days (when militancy was at its peak). The administration and the security forces are preparing to deal with it with their full might,” Sinha said.

He said the growing economy of Kashmir was a threat for elements across the line of control.

“They are unable to digest the arrival of so many tourists to the Valley or the growth of the economy,” Sinha said.

On June 5, Sinha had said innocents were being killed in Kashmir to force security forces to take some ‘desperate action’. He assured people that no action will be taken against innocent people.

Kashmir has been witnessing a spree of targeted killings of civilians (some of them from the minority Hindu community) and security forces.

A 26-year-old bank employee from Rajasthan, Vijay Kumar and a labourer from Bihar, Dilkhush Kumar were shot dead by militants in Kashmir’s Kulgam and Budgam on June 2, marking 12 targeted killings of civilians in the Valley since March.

Kashmiri Hindu government employees have been protesting against the killing of teacher Rajni Bala who was shot dead by terrorists in Kashmir’s Kulgam district on May 31.

Last month, two civilians, including Kashmiri Pandit employee Rahul Bhat and three off-duty policemen, were killed in the Valley by terrorists.
