KARNAL: Newly-elected Rajya Sabha MPs Randeep Singh Surjewala (of Congress) and Krishan Lal Panwar (of the Bharatiya Janata Party) were given a rousing welcome by their supporters back home on Saturday.

On reaching his home town Kaithal, Surjewala visited a temple and offered prayers. He thanked party leadership, especially Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, for showing faith in him. He promised to raise the voice of the common man in the Upper House. “I am grateful to God and the Congress leadership for giving me this opportunity,” said Surjewala, who has been elected from Congress-ruled Rajasthan.

After having faced two defeats in Jind by-election and 2019 assembly elections, Surjewala’s elevation to the Upper House has come as a relief for him and his supporters. Meanwhile, on his way to Panipat from Chandigarh after being elected as BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP, Krishan Lal Panwar was given a warm welcome at multiple locations between Kurukshetra and Panipat.

BJP workers, wielding party flags and banners, welcomed him with flower showers and garlands. “I thank the BJP leadership and Haryana chief minister Manoharl Lal Khattar for giving me this opportunity,” he said. He took a jibe at the Congress party as its candidate Ajay Maken had to face defeat from the BJP-JJP combine supported candidate Kartikeya Sharma.

“The Congress is divided and it has no future in Haryana. Its candidate became a victim of cross-voting,” he said.

He said Khattar has assured him due respect if Bishoi joins the BJP in future. “I am a simple worker of the BJP and did not go to anybody to seek vote but it’s the leadership which sent its worker to the Upper House,” he added. He said BJP MLAs cast their 100% vote while one Congress MLA cross-voted as per his “inner conscience” and the vote of another Congress MLA was declared invalid. He said he will raise the voice of the common man in the Rajya Sabha.
