BOLLYWOOD KA DILLI WALA PYAAR
All the big films this year have been shot in Delhi
With the two most loved films of the year — Shoojit Sircar’s Piku and Aanand L Rai’s Tanu Weds Manu Returns — based in Delhi, the Capital seems to have become a filmmaker’s darling.
Some upcoming big ticket films such as SRK starrer-Fan, Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone-starrer Tamasha and Abhishek Kapoor’s Fitoor have also been filmed here.
Filmmakers and experts say that the Capital seems to have become the lucky charm for the film industry. “In these films, the place becomes more like a character in the film,” says trade analyst Komal Nahta. Sircar agrees. “I’ve grown up in Delhi and you’ll see that all my films have something of Delhi in it — the city takes the shape of character,” he says. Film distributor Rajesh Thadani adds, “People often sees pictures of the shooting and they want to see the same places in the film too.
While Piku was shot in Gurgaon, Tanu weds Manu Returns captured Delhi University. Films such as Anushka Sharma’s NH10 and Kalki Koechlin-starrer Margarita With a Straw, where Kalki plays a student of Ramjas College, were also based in Delhi. Akshay Kumar’s film Baby was also based in Vasant Kunj and Greater Noida.
Actors enjoy shooting in the Capital too. “I love shooting in Delhi. My association with Delhi started when I started my modelling career. I spent time here while shooting for Love Aaj Kal, Piku and Tamasha,” says Deepika. Actor Kangana Ranaut says, “I have shot many films in Delhi and I think the Delhi summer is as famous as its sardi.” Adds Tanu Weds Manu Returns director Anand L Rai, “Kangana felt very comfortable (shooting in DU), and had come without security.”
