‘LET’S UNDERSTAND THE ANTHEM FIRST’

Richa supports SC’s decision to make National Anthem obligatory before film screenings but says understanding the meaning of our anthem is pivotal

Chadha (right), however, has a rather strong point to make. The 29-year-old actor feels it’s imperative that people first understand the meaning of the country’s anthem.

“I think the Supreme Court should also pass a ruling that makes it compulsory for people to learn the meaning of the National Anthem. It is an anthem praising the beauty and people of India, all regions and people included. It doesn’t point any threat from an enemy, doesn’t say we will defend the country till we die, or that we must have a war. It’s a positive anthem that lets people be. That should be the aim — to live and let live,” says Richa who has been a part of critically acclaimed films. Acting on a petition to list down things that amounts to abuse of the anthem, the SC said that when the National Anthem is played it is imperative for everyone to show honour and respect for it as it would instil a sense of committed patriotism and nationalism in masses.

When asked if such a ruling will make any significant difference to the thinking of masses, Richa asserts, “Yes. Standing up is a physical action, it won’t change how people feel. If we must, let’s investigate why people don’t feel like standing for the National Anthem. But first, let’s understand the meaning of the anthem we are standing up for.”
