For health goals: Tips to develop will power

- Anjali Mukerjee

Everyone wants to be healthy, but lack the will power to do so. Sometimes it is difficult, especially when you crave foods that aren’t good for you. It takes a lot of discipline to overcome these addictions. If you eat healthy generally, your body can handle a little bit of abuse. However, if your cravings overpower, then you need to develop the will power to overcome your addictions. Here are a few tips: ■ The difference between knowing and awareness:

Everyone knows that sweets, colas, fried snacks, cigarettes, excessive alcohol are bad for our health. But most of us are not aware how damaging these foods are. Just by being aware of the potential damage that such cravings can cause to our health, we can get sufficiently motivated to give them up. ■ Write down your motivation:

Writing down your motivations such as ‘I want to give up sweets’, ‘I want to be really healthy again’, ‘I want to be free of my acne, or headaches’, and so on, will help you to identify the change that you wish to see in yourself. When you write it down and read it, you subconsciously begin the process of searching for answers.

Maintain a positive attitude: It is not possible to remain positive all the time, but you need to maintain a positive state of mind. You need to train your mind and taste buds to respond to the commands that your motivation has created. Then, allow these positive commands to become frequent and predominant, allowing them to influence your body and taste buds.

Practice: Keeping your focus in the positive direction needs discipline, which in turn, needs practice. Practice skipping that chocolate or cigarette after dinner that you want to get rid of — whatever your new goal to achieve good health is. Practice of any skill makes you internally focused and improves your ability at that skill. You may find yourself going back to your cravings, but don’t let that hinder your progress towards better health. Re-read your motivation and once again you will find the road to better health.
