Actors Arjun Kapoor and Parineeta Chopra had become a hit pair with their film Ishaqzaade (2012), which was his Bollywood debut and her first lead role. This year, they’re a pair again with Dibakar Banerjee’s next film, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar.

“There’s so much of give-and-take between us,” says Parineeti about Arjun. She adds that her friendship with Arjun is “just too supreme”.

Interestingly, a number of other female actors are also pairing up with the male stars with whom they had their first major role (in a debut film or otherwise). Bhumi Pednekar, who debuted with Ayushmann Khurrana in Dum Laga Ke Haisha, will be back with him in Shubh Mangal Saavdhan; Anushka Sharma has two films lined up with Shah Rukh Khan (Jab Harry Met Sejal; and Aanand L. Rai’s next venture), with whom she debuted in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi; and Katrina Kaif, whose first big Bollywood role, in Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?, was with Salman Khan, again pairs up with him in Tiger Zinda Hai. Moreover, Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt, who debuted together in Student of the Year, are likely to be seen together in Aashiqui 3.

“The explanation is very simple: if something has worked well, why fiddle with it too much? Going by that logic, filmmakers repeat a tried-and-tested pair. But the casting must be backed by strong content,” says exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi.

Alia says, “They’ve been working on the script. Yes, I’ll do the film as I love the concept, but they have to get the script, so that we can talk in a concrete manner.”

Actors say that working with their former co-stars is “a big help.” Anushka says, “My relationship with [Shah Rukh] has grown over the years. We’ve worked together and known each other for a long time now… He has had so many life experiences, and I enjoy that kind of a friendship with him.”
