MORE THAN AN ACTOR, I CONSIDER MYSELF AN ENTERTAINER: BOMAN

Actor Boman Irani wants to do all kinds of films — from “commercial potboilers” to “arty cinema”. And it’s all for his creative satisfaction.

“I consider myself as not only an actor, but an entertainer as well. That’s why I want to choose films from all spectrums. As long as I am justifying the role to the audience watching that film, I’m not bothered,” says Irani, defending his portrayal of Batook Patel in the film Housefull 3 (2016).

“I loved playing that role. I know a lot of people slammed that role and the film, but I don’t care. That film and that role was not intended for them. The film was only meant for entertainment, and people who did not want to be entertained did not like the role. I am not bothered about that criticism, and nor will that make me stop from doing them. If I like the role, and I think it’s a different character that will entertain people in some way, I’m going to do it,” says the 57-year-old actor.

But it’s not like criticism from any quarter doesn’t bother Irani. “I don’t bother myself with criticism from that faction for which the film isn’t intended for. But if someone from the target audience did not like my portrayal and wasn’t entertained, that will make me think,” says Irani, who will be seen portraying the role of Nobel laureate social activist Kailash Satyarthi in the upcoming film, Jhalki.

The actor confesses that he parts with a character once the shooting finishes. “It is very important for you as an actor and your own sanity, that you get over the character as soon as the shoot is over. If you don’t do that, you start getting confused about who you really are, and that’s not good,” he says. “When I was doing Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006), I just couldn’t believe what his (his character, the shady property dealer Khurrana) mind was capable of thinking, and it was a very disturbing character to play. I had to immediately let go of him, or I would have gone mad. You learn that in theatre — you tend to believe that the character is you. That can alter your life,” adds Irani.
