Nolan was inspired to make Dunkirk 20 years ago

Christopher Nolan has revealed that he and his producer wife, Emma Thomas, first had the idea for their film Dunkirk more than 20 years ago on a boat trip. The director reportedly said, “I remember Emma and I made a trip with a friend of ours on a boat — many years ago. We thought it would take us six or seven hours. It took 18 to 19 hours. It was very, very cold. The sea was very, very rough with the channels. We came out of that experience with a great amount of respect for the reality of what actually happened.”

The film-maker reportedly said that the experience remained with him over the years. “What would it really have been like to get on a boat and make a crossing like that, but not be on holidays as we were — just going to hang around and prance for a bit — that just stuck with both of us over the years.”

Dunkirk was a blockbuster at th box-office as the film went on to ea over $525 million globally.

Speaking about his blockbuster series based on the comic book charact Batman, Nolan say that the reason he thinks those movies stand out now is because, back when was making them, he was given the time. “That’s a privilege an a luxury that filmmakers aren’t afforde anymore. I think it wa the last time that anyo was able to say to a studio, ‘I might do another one, but it will four years’. There’s too much pressure on relea schedules to let people d that now, but creatively it’s a huge advantage,” h said.
