Bollywood actors are becoming increasingly open to working in the digital medium. The shows of some, such as Rajkummar Rao, Richa Chadha, Vivek Oberoi, and Rana Daggubati, are already on air. Others, including Saif Ali Khan, Anil Kapoor, R Madhavan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Nimrat Kaur, and Krishna Bhatt (daughter of Vikram Bhatt) are awaiting the release of their upcoming shows. So, what makes digital the new goto platform for B-towners?

SPURT IN DIGITAL SHOWS

“Digital is the great road map to where films should be heading in the near future. Some of the web series are far better in quality than movies. Breathe is one of my best works, as an actor,” says R Madhavan, talking of his thriller web series. He adds that people are only opening up to the idea of trying a different space, because of the variety of options.

NEW EXPERIENCE

Krishna Bhatt, daughter of filmmaker Vikram Bhatt, makes her directorial debut with the show, Untouchables. She says, “The web world is highly underestimated. It is by far the most popular and competitive medium of storytelling today. It also gives you immediate feedback, quick likes and quick dislikes. It’s a beautiful and volatile medium to debut in.” On taking up direction, she adds, “I’ve wanted to tell stories for a long time now. I’ve watched my father tell stories for the last 20 years, and it only inspired me to tell mine. Working with my father was the most enriching experience,” says Krishna.

NO LIMITATIONS

“As far as debuting on the digital medium is concerned, I was a little sceptical. But the story was a winner for me,” says Nimrat Kaur who will make her digital debut with the show The Test Case. The actor adds that because of the medium that it is, makers and artistes have more space and bandwidth to play with. “Otherwise, content gets curtailed in a feature film because you have to consider the audience you are presenting it to. They are certain factors that come into play because of censorship. This medium goes beyond all limitations,” says Nimrat.

EASY ACCESSIBILITY

“You can be in your car, train, and you could be watching a show on your mobile. It is accessible at the touch of a fingertip. That is exciting for me to explore as a space. I’m looking forward to how this pans out and excited at having taken this risk at this point in my career,” says Nimrat, talking about the ease of accessibility of digital content.
