‘I have put all savings into my new home’

Actor Varun Dhawan says that he feels ‘happy’ when he stands in his apartment, his very own space, earned the hard way, but that he still runs upstairs every day to chill with his family

He didn’t have a super solid 2017 just in terms of boxoffice exploits (thanks to Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Judwaa 2), but it was so also at the personal level. After all, Varun Dhawan became the proud owner of an expansive home in Juhu, Mumbai, last year. In December, he moved into his new apartment, one floor below his parents’ house.

‘A DIFFERENT FEELING’

Varun readily admits that “it feels good” to have his own place. “It’s been a few weeks since I moved into my new place, so it’s a very different feeling. Out of those few days, too, I have — by mistake and out of habit — gone up to my parents’ place several times to chill with them. My brother (director Rohit Dhawan), my bhabhi, and my parents still live there, after all,” he says.

The Main Tera Hero (2014) actor still runs upstairs “every morning when I wake up”.

‘SCARES ME A BIT’

Varun adds, “It’s going to take me a while [to settle into my new house]. I still have to shift all my clothes. [Owning a house] gives you the feeling of being a grown-up, but that also scares me a bit.”

But isn’t he happy to have his own space? “Yes,” he says, “it’s amazing because the kind of profession that I’m in, I needed more space for all the clutter, my personal thoughts and just being on my own. Also, I wanted that [space] to listen to my own thoughts and simply be away. In that sense, it’s fantastic and my mum has designed the house exactly the way I wanted it to be,” he adds.

‘IT’S AN ACHIEVEMENT’

The actor reveals that he has “put in all his savings of the past five years” for his new abode. “That’s why I feel happy when I stand in my house. But home is where my family is and where my friends are. It’s not about the space, but the sheer love one feels there,” says Varun, adding, “I know it’s extremely difficult [to buy a home] so, that’s an achievement. It feels great.”

‘EXTREMELY CONTENT’

About his future line-up, the actor says, “As of now, my next release is October, directed by Shoojitda (Sircar). It’ll be followed by Sui Dhaaga. After that, a really big film is lined up,” says Varun, who is “extremely content” with the way 2017 turned out for him.
