It’ll be a learning experience: Emraan on producing films

- Pooja Sharma

Emraan Hashmi has begun shooting for his debut production, Captain Nawab. The actor is happy to take charge of the creative aspects of a project. Talking about his reasons for turning a producer, he says, “I can nurture a project from its inception to release. Sometimes you feel a film just goes into a space you probably never imagined it to go into. It’s a new experience for me. The kind of films that I would make will be the kind of projects I’d like to watch as an audience as well.”

Emraan, who has been part of out-of-the-box films earlier such as Chocolate (2005) and Shanghai (2012) is happy that niche films have begun doing good business at the box office. “It is a great time. It will help me produce films that I have always wanted to. I would want to pick up as many unique concepts as possible, and it’s not really about the budgets. I’ve never segregated films based on their budgets. Sometimes, big budget films are terribly low on ideas. And some films that are gems don’t necessarily have high budgets. However, I’m open to those (small budget) as well as bigbudget films,” he says.

So does he have a sharp business acumen? “I don’t know. I will find out soon. Initially, I will be mainly dealing with the creative aspects [of a film]. We have a team to manage other departments. It will be a learning experience. Some of them are new and some have been around for a while, but we will learn from our mistakes and grow,” says the Baadshaho (2017) actor.

Not many know that Emraan is a trained singer. On asking him if he will croon in his upcoming movie, the actor says, “The team wants me to. I don’t know... I am a bit of a hit and miss (laughs). I used to do riyaaz in school and later I stopped, but never say never. However, at the moment, there is no such plan.”
