Dolores O’Riordan, the lead singer of The Cranberries, passed away at 46. The news was confirmed by the Irish musician’s publicist, Lindsey Holmes that O’Riordan passed away suddenly. Reportedly, no cause of death has yet been announced. O’Riordan had been in London for a recording session, after she cancelled a tour to Europe and North America with a reunited Cranberries last year because of a back problem. The band released the acoustic album Something Else in 2017.

The world of music expressed its shock and mourned the demise of The Cranberries’ singer Dolores O’Riordan, who was found dead in a London hotel room on Monday night.

Celebrities took to Twitter to express themselves. Among the first to pay tribute was Michael D Higgins, President of Ireland. O’Riordan was from Limerick, Ireland, and Higgins spoke of The Cranberries’ “influence on rock and pop music in Ireland” and over the globe. “I recall with fondness the late Limerick TD (Teachta Dála, or a member of the lower house of Irish Parliament) Jim Kemmy’s introduction of her and The Cranberries to me, and the pride he and so many others took in their successes. To all those who follow and support Irish music, Irish musicians and the performing arts her death will be a big loss,” said the Irish President.

Another moving tribute came from singer Ronan Keating, who is O’Riordan’s countryman. Keating posted: “Totally shocked at the news about Dolores O Riordan an incredible talent and a lovely soul. My prayers are with her family and loved ones.”

Dave Davies, singer of the popular American band, The Kinks, recalled his recent chat with the deceased singer, posting: “I’m really shocked that #DoloresORiordan has passed so suddenly - I was talking to her a couple weeks before Christmas she seemed happy and well - we even spoke about maybe writing some songs together unbelievable god bless her.”

English talk show host and singer James Corden remembered O’Riordan, whom he met when he was a teenager. “I once met Delores O’Riordan when I was 15. She was kind and lovely, I got her autograph on my train ticket and it made my day. She had the most amazing voice and presence. So sorry to hear that she’s passed away today x,” tweeted Corden.

British rock group R.E.M, too, tweeted its condolences: “We are all saddened to hear the news. Dolores was a brilliant & generous spirit w/ a quick humor & a stunning voice. Our love to the band & to her family & fans.” Michael Stipe & the whole of R.E.M. & REMHQ”.

At the time of going to press, the authorities had still not revealed the reason behind the death of the 46-year-old singer, who was in London “for just a recording session”, according to her publicist.

The Cranberries, known for hits such as Zombie and Linger, were formed in 1990, went on a hiatus in 2003, and reunited in 2009. O’Riordan released two solo albums, Are You Listening (2007) and No Baggage (2009). Overall, the band has sold an estimated 40 million records.
