Guru Randhawa has emerged as one of the most popular singers of 2017 with several independent single hits such as ‘High rated gabru’, ‘Suit’ and ‘Patola’, among others. He also collaborated with T-series for the mixtapes where he sang a mash-up of his popular songs ‘Ban ja rani’ and ‘High rated gabru’. Going by the amount of appreciation he received for his songs last year, he says his musical journey so far has been “exceptionally good”. “I have received so much love from my fans that it feels awesome. My songs have garnered a lot of appreciation and I have learned a lot too, in the process. From the very beginning, I always dreamt about my music reaching every corner of the world. Finally, it is happening and it’s like a dream come true. My fans are everything for me. Without their love, none of this would have been possible. It’s a hearty combination of my hard work and my fans’ love.”

Guru has released many singles in the past couple of years. So, ask him what he thinks the status of independent music is in our country, and he says, “Music is always evolving. Independent music has been making its mark for a very long time now. The only difference is that some of those songs got acknowledged and some didn’t. But due to the rise of digital platforms these days, it has become easy for an artiste to showcase their talent and come to the forefront [with their music]. Independent music has been always free. Anyone can put an audio/ video online and go viral nowadays. However, some artistes release big budget videos and still remain unnoticed. At the end, all the mediums generate revenues and the number of downloads for a song does matter for an artiste, be it an independent artiste or a Bollywood artiste.”

Guru says he loves the kind of music being made in Bollywood today. And, though he refrains from commenting on the trend of remaking songs that have become so popular today, he is firm when he says that he will never sing a remix. “I love the music that I make and Bollywood loves me for that. And yes, if Bollywood wants me [to sing] I am always available,” says the singer.

Guru is currently working on singles and movie songs. “My single ‘High rated gabru’ will be soon featured in Nawabzaade. There is a lot in the pipeline for 2018,” says the singer.
